1. What is the role of a volunteer consultant?

Volunteer consultants are assigned in teams to the wide variety of nonprofit and educational clients expected. The goal of these consulting teams is to understand the mission and goals of the organization, and how it operates.  The teams review and identify the agency’s issues.  Consulting services include a variety of areas such as strategic planning, board development, executive mentoring, and knowledge-based areas.

The team first gathers information about the organization and its performance by meeting with the board chair or board member, the executive director, key staff, and others; reviewing strategic plans, financial statements, founding documents, and other documents; or researching the general field of endeavor. After analyzing the data, the consulting team develops a plan for consultation and presents it to the client.  After the plan is in place, the project begins.

4. How does FRESC prepare new volunteer consultants?

FRESC provides training opportunities in the areas of strategic planning, board development, executive mentoring, organizational assessment, as well as other opportunities to learn more about emerging trends,  tools, and compelling issues that will add to their own vast experience in providing tested solutions to real world problems.  These courses are offered throughout the year and are taught by senior FRESC volunteer consultants and community experts.  Additionally, volunteer consultants receive valuable on-the-job training in working on teams and with more experienced volunteer consultants.

 5. How are volunteer consultants assigned to projects?

Volunteer consultants are assigned to projects based on their skills, experience, training, interests, availability and geography. Initially, new volunteer consultants are assigned to teams with other more experienced FRESC volunteer consultants. As they take on more projects and participate in more training, they may gradually take on more responsibility on FRESC projects.
